Pilot Health Program Targets Homeless Women
A new pilot program launched in Burke County, dedicated to bringing compassionate, high-quality women’s health care directly to those experiencing homelessness or housing instability, with a renewed focus on community involvement and support. Beginning October 22, the Women’s Health Mobile Service Pilot Program will be available through December.
Driven by a collaborative network—including UNC Health Blue Ridge, Burke County Public Health, Good Samaritan Clinic, Burke United Christian Ministries, and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health—the mobile unit provides free, gender-specific care in a safe, welcoming, and community-centered space. The program strives to involve local organizations and residents, ensuring that services reflect the unique needs and voices of Burke County’s women.
UNC Health Blue Ridge providers Nancy Sciara, BA, OGNP, Kendra Moore, WHNP-BC, and Kimberly Lyle, MSN, WHNP-BC will deliver personalized care to women facing housing challenges. “Our goal is not just to offer check-ups or support, but to listen to women’s stories and partner with them on their health journeys,” said Sciara. “We encourage community members to share their ideas and feedback, helping us shape the program so it truly meets local needs.”
Thanks to the strong partnership among community groups, participants gain access to a broad network of resources, including mental health support, social services, and follow-up care.
“This program is about meeting women where they are and working together to address their health concerns with expertise and dignity,” said Christi Winebarger, MHS, Director of Blue Ridge Medical Group Primary Care Operations. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the community come together to provide compassionate, comprehensive care. By embracing partnership, listening, and involving everyone, we can advance equitable healthcare for all women in Burke County.”
